If your search history looks like:

  • "surprise proposal Zermatt"

  • "helicopter proposal Switzerland"

  • "glacier proposal in the Swiss Alps"

  • "proposal planner Zermatt"

  • "how to plan a surprise proposal from abroad"

  • "book a proposal photographer in Switzerland"

…then you're in the right place. This is the story of one of my favorite days of the late summer: a full-day, concierge-style surprise proposal in Zermatt, planned from the first helicopter blade to evening dinner reservation. We pulled it off thanks to the lovely coordination and partnership of Juliette of Zermatt Events.

Planning a Surprise Proposal in Zermatt From Afar (Or Through an Assistant)

This one started a little differently than most. The inquiry didn't come from the groom. It came from his assistant, who contacted Juliette on his behalf to set everything up.

If you're a busy professional, or you're planning from another country, this is a great way to do it. You don't have to figure out helicopters, permits, restaurants and photography schedules alone. Juliette and I handled the logistics so that the groom-to-be could show up and focus on the one thing that mattered. His sweet partner had no idea what was coming.

Juliette runs Zermatt Events and is a local who knows this valley inside and out. I'm the photographer. I plan the shots, the timing and the light. Between the two of us, there is one calm, coordinated point of contact for the whole day.

Step One: A Helicopter Flight Over the Alps (That Doesn't Land Where You'd Expect)

We started the day with a helicopter flight. I've been on many, many helicopter flights by now, and they're always wonderful. But this one was different, because we didn't land at the usual spot. We landed on a glacier.

Landing on a Glacier: Crevasses, Harnesses & Our Mountain Guide, Suzi

A glacier landing is adventurous because there are crevasses. This is not a place to wander off on your own.

We brought a mountain guide named Suzi. She made sure it was safe for us to step out of the helicopter, and she helped us move across the ice and snow. We all wore harnesses for safety.

Being on snowy, icy ground in the middle of summer was spectacular. The energy on the glacier felt completely different from any other flight I've done. You have to take your time and be careful. It slows you down, and honestly, that was a gift. It made the whole moment feel quieter and more present.

The Proposal on the Glacier

We planned ahead of time exactly where I'd stand in relation to the groom when he proposed, so I'd have the best angle and light without giving anything away. We even discussed the couples "good sides" and schemed a setup to capture them perfectly.

The bride had no idea she was being proposed to that day. But the surprises kept coming.

As I always do, I'd brought my usual flowers and champagne to celebrate right after the moment. We took just a few photos up there. I didn't launch into my full session yet, because I knew there was another surprise coming.

More Surprises: Juliette, the Electro-Taxi and a Private Picnic

Even after the proposal, the surprises weren't over. When we flew back and landed on the helipad, Juliette was waiting for us with an electro-taxi car, a Zermatt classic, since the village is car-free. It was lovely for the couple to be greeted by the excited person who had helped plan the whole day, instead of a random taxi driver.

She drove us to a private, intimate picnic spot that she had arranged just for them. Juliette personally climbed a huge stretch of stairs six times to set it all up. That kind of care is what separates a concierge experience from a booking.

We left the couple to enjoy the picnic alone, because they'd just gotten engaged and deserved a quiet moment together.

The Full Engagement Session in Golden Light

After the picnic, we launched into the full, classic photo session. The light was spectacular, and the couple was relaxed and happy. They had a blast. Red wine always helps!

After the Session: Cleanup, Dinner and a Hike Home

When we wrapped, Juliette and I packed everything up and drove the supplies back down to Zermatt, so the couple didn't have to think about any of it. They decided to hike the little path back on their own.

That night, they had a dinner reservation that Juliette had arranged for them. The whole day was planned from start to finish, so nobody had to worry about anything but celebrating.

Questions People Often Ask About Surprise Proposals in Zermatt

Can someone else plan the Zermatt proposal for me?

Yes. This proposal was arranged by Darius's assistant and planned entirely by Juliette. Anyone you trust can be the point of contact, as long as the details stay confidential.

Can you really land a helicopter on a glacier for a proposal?

Yes, with the right operator, weather and a certified mountain guide. We landed on a glacier, with harnesses and a guide to keep everyone safe around crevasses.

Is a glacier proposal safe?

With a mountain guide, proper equipment and good weather, it is. Our guide Suzi checked the exit from the helicopter and led us across the ice. Plan to move slowly.

When is the best time for a glacier proposal in Zermatt?

This one happened in late summer. Standing on snow and ice in warm weather feels unforgettable. Conditions can change, so plan in advance and keep your dates flexible.

How do you keep the proposal a surprise?

We plan every detail in advance, including my position, the timing and the story you give your partner for the day. I can keep my camera out of the way or plan a cover story until the moment.

Do I need a photographer for the proposal?

You only get one first reaction. I photograph proposals so you can relive it without worrying about your phone.
